A Closer Look At The Different Types Of Medicare Health Plans

Insurance Blog

Choosing a Medicare health insurance plan can be a struggle for many seniors. Oftentimes this is because individuals are confused by the many different types of Medicare health plans there are to choose from. If you have found yourself dealing with this same problem, the information below can help you to better understand the different types of Medicare plans so that you can choose the one that is right for you.

Original Or Traditional Medicare

Original Medicare or traditional Medicare as it is sometimes called is the most basic type of Medicare health insurance plan available. This type of Medicare coverage is broken down into two parts. The first part of this coverage is Part A coverage. Part A coverage applies to the care you receive when you are admitted to the hospital. The second part of your coverage is Part B coverage. Part B coverage applies to any care you receive outside of a hospital setting. Typically, you will only pay a co-pay for visits that fall under your Part B coverage. While original Medicare does provide quite a lot of coverage, there are some services that are not covered by this type of insurance plan. For example, original Medicare plans do not offer coverage for prescription medications or vision care.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Another very common type of Medicare plan is known as a Medicare supplement plan. This type of health insurance plan is designed to work with your original Medicare plan and is not intended to be a standalone policy. The exact coverage that is offered by these plans can vary from one instance to the next. However, the main goal of these plans is to provide you with coverage that is absent from an original Medicare plan. Consequently, a supplemental insurance plan will likely include prescription coverage and coverage for any Part B co-pays that are associated with your original Medicare plan. Some Medicare supplement plans will also offer dental and vision coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Unlike Medicare supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans are an all-in-one type of insurance policy. This is because Medicare Advantage plans offer both the coverage you receive under your original Medicare and the coverage of a supplement plan. The primary benefit of choosing this type of Medicare health insurance plan is that you do not need to deal with the stress of figuring out which insurance policy should be used for the different types of care you require. Instead, you will simply use the same insurance card for all your medical services. This can help to simplify the Medicare process. Unfortunately, this additional convenience often comes at a higher cost than other types of Medicare health plans.
